Roll Tite Shutters - Ripped Off

In 2004, I had Roll Tite install hurricane shutters on my home in Melbourne Beach, Florida, at a cost of $51,000.When they started to malfunction, I called and left messages for Terry Tate, one of the owners of Roll Tite Shutters.

I also emailed the company. They never returned the calls or emails.

I have broken (disintegrated) latches that I can't find replacements for.I've had other shutter repair people look at repairing the shutters, but have had no luck in finding anyone who could come up with matching or substitute replacement latchesWhat I need is the ability to buy replacement latches and have someone do the repair work required to get the shutters back into workable shape.

Somehow I feel like you are only telling part of the story, but here is my view.Roll-down shutters have many moving parts and most are cheaply built.

$51,000 is a lot of money but doesn't necessarily mean that you purchased top-of-the-line product. I saw a house in Cape Coral that had over $100.000 in shutters put on it.

The cheaper roll-downs are usually identified by having plastic hardware instead of metal. That is why they traditionally carry a 5 year (or shorter) warranty.

Sometimes the warranties are only good if you sign up for a regular maintenance plan. Even then, the replacement parts costs are many times pro-rated and not free. Sometimes the labor for parts is discounted (but usually isn't). No matter how well they are maintained, the plastic parts used in roll-down or accordion shutters deteriorate and eventually disintegrate from exposure to the UV rays of the sun and will require overhauling.

This sounds like it may be the situation that you have explained. Since your shutters are more than 5 years old, the company doesn't want to tell you the bad news (or they already have and you didn't like the answer).

If replacement parts are no longer available for your units the only option is total replacement.

What hurricane protection product will you choose now? More of the same?

How about impact-rated windows that will cost twice as much and then cost you again after they break (if you don't put shutters...

The pay-off is 40 years or more, plus the insulated units leak and fog up and need replacement, too.

Here are some of your choices:

Roll-downs or accordions with parts to wear out, annual maintenance fees and high purchase price. Fabrics and screens have to be deployed and stored. They also have too much "give" and allow the windows behind them to be broken. Corrugated panels or plywood are a pain to deploy and store.

Bahamas require expensive repairs after an impact and make great homes for hornets and spiders. Hurricane windows are too expensive, break upon hurricane impact and fog up from leaky seals.

It takes a lot of internet research to find out what will work best for you.Good luck.

Poor customer service by Roll Tite Shutters

Roll Tite Shutters of Palm Bay installed exterior roll-down shutters five years ago.To properly maintain the shutters, I depend upon routine maintenance once a year.

Last year they failed to followup on additional work to be done. This year in May, 2011, three separate appointments were made to maintain the shutters as there is now a problem. On each occasion the they cancelled the three appointments and on the last appointment they never even bothered to cancel and just didn't show up.

This resulted in rearranging my entire daily schedule and inconveniencing myself and others.I consider this abuse of customers.

I am puzzled that the company didn't maintain the unit last year.It is what they use for revenues in the off season and to keep their crews busy.

You could have had ANY company do your service work to keep your shutter warranty valid. Competing companies ALWAYS love to get their foot into the door of a potential new customer.

They are always calling me - just like the A/C company - so I'm confused that your maintenance work wasn't done and so your accounting makes no sense to me.Wish I could hear the other side of the story.
